Transition TO @ Farmer’s Markets

Hey!

I’d like to share some thoughts and relate our experience with awareness raising at two farmer’s market booths this fall.

Overall the experience was extremely positive with many people willing to speak to us and showing some interest in the movement. As you might imagine many people are wary at first, expecting high pressure sales, but the farmer’s market atmosphere is

quite friendly and a good place to engage with people. Definitely seems like a good venue for… Continue

Dusting off the bike

A few weeks ago I spotted the Toronto Cyclists Union tent at the Brickworks farmer’s market. I thought “Hey, there’s a Transition-aligned outfit” and without much further thought, went over to sign up.

At one point in the conversation the volunteer asked “So, do you ride to work?” “No” I said. “Why not?”.

“Uh…It’s far?” I explained, lamely. I didn’t tell him I hadn’t been on my bike in two years. I guess I’d intended to support them more than… Continue

Re-schooling

I guess this isn't the typical transition-style re-skilling, but I recently realized I was living near to the George Brown campus that teaches most of the technical/trade skills (near Casa Loma/Dupont subway).

Something to consider if you have continuing education options near you or can't find any other trainer.

Just finished the second class of Woodworking and we've started using handsaws and a… Continue

Peak Oil and Economics

At a recent meeting someone asked about the economic impact of peak oil. Here’s a quick summary of what I have learned as a layman after reading about it for several years.

Inflation vs. Deflation

The most hotly debated item is whether peak oil will result in inflation or deflation. These terms relate to the balance…

Hi John, the Intro to Transition is something I would be interested in and I am definitely interested in learning skills like canning. Ultimately i would like to try my hand at a kitchen garden- i have a black thumb.

Sorry about the confusion John, I guess I'm still getting used to this site's platform. I'm at the Second Cup across from the Mad Bean (it closes at 5 on weeknights, unfortunately) right now, if you're still able to drop by, that would be great. If not, I hope we can reschedule soon!

Sounds good, the best thing I've discovered so far in this neighbourhood is the Mad Bean coffee shop on Eglinton West, not sure how easy it is for you to get there, but it would be good to meet up. My schedule is pretty open right now, thoughweeknights are probably best.

Thanks for the welcome John,
I'm new here in Toronto, living in the midtown area. As such I don't know too much about the neighbourhood itself, but looking forward to meeting some like minded people so I can start turning my simmering anxiety about our future into productive action!

Well thank you! :) It was a great opportunity for TTo (Transition Toronto) to be allowed a few minutes to 'plug' our initiative. And even better that Mr. Heinberg 'plugged' TTs in general. We had lots of people leave us their email addresses for follow-up!!
