Transition Toronto

Supporting and nurturing the growth of a more resilient Toronto

Is it possible to have a page where people can add to seperate lists for books, movies, and websites. I don't know about anyone else, but I am finding it difficult to keep track of whom mentioned what in which blog or forum. I think it would be nice to have a running list for each that everyone can esily refer to.

Good idea, and we were about to add a sub-page called either "Library" or "Resources", where we would list titles of enviro. books & movies, and maybe with a short description on the film, and where to buy or lend one from. Having said that, the UK Transition site has a page where it lists films and compares them. I'll have to see if I can find that again....
I'm in the process of compiling a hard master list of useful movies and books, as well as possibly some blogs that are great resources. I think it would be a good idea to find out who in the Transition Community might already own a copy of some of these movies, and then we could do a resource share to help with awareness raising. That way you don't have to look far to obtain some material to show if you want to hold a movie screening in your community. I like the idea of having the list on the website for anyone to update and bring suggestions to.
Let's create this resources page - post your lists of favourite books, videos and sites and I'll compile them into a page.

Here's my list (most I've read some not):

Books
Transition Handbook – Hopkins

Keeping Our Cool by Andrew Weaver (Canadian)
Storms Of My Grandchildren by James Hansen
Now Or Never by Tim Flannery
Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet
The Vanishing Face Of Gaia by James Lovelock

Carbon Shift: How Peak Oil and the Climate Crisis Will Change Canada (and Our Lives) by Thomas Homer-Dixon et al. (Canadian)
When Oil Peaked by Kenneth Deffeyes
Why Your World Is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller by Jeff Rubin
Stupid to the Last Drop: How Alberta Is Bringing Environmental Armageddon to Canada (And Doesn't Seem to Care) by William Marsden (Canadian)
Twilight in the Desert: The Coming Saudi Oil Shock and the World Economy
Matthew R. Simmons
Party's Over The by Richard Heinberg
Powerdown by Richard Heinberg
The Long Descent by John M Greer
Reinventing Collapse by Dmitry Orlov
The Long Emergency: Surviving the End Of Oil, Climate Change, and Other Converging Catastrophes Of the Twenty-First Century by James Howard Kunstler

Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations by David R. Montgomery
Blackout by Richard Heinberg

If we're going to have a resources page, let's do it right!  Make sure that we have the publisher, date, ISBN, location and printing status (and possibly availability at local libraries) to show that the book is out there and we are organized!

Just my two cents!

Thanks Adrian, that is a great idea. We do now have a "Resources" page, but the info on the books are found via a link to Amazon. You are right. Perhaps it would be better to have all the information available, including whether or not it is available at the libraries. I will get on that ASAP!

Hi all!  This is an excellent idea!  Having all the resources listed, with library and other types of availability, on a single page would definitely make them a lot easier to find!  Great list already BTW.

And while we're on the subject of resources, does anyone have/know where I can get the film The Power of Community?  Our Green Team want to show it at church for our next film-showing, and ideally buy it to add to the church library.  And apparently our next showing is on February 28th!  So sorry about the short notice, but all help appreciated!

Have you tried the Community Solutions website at http://www.communitysolution.org/poc.html I don't know if they ship to Canada. Otherwise, you can get it for twice the price on Amazon.ca. I don't know why it is so darn expensive.

Oo!  Thanks Marissa!  I didn't know about that site, but I'll definitely check it out!

Sure - under Resources, I'd added a Books page a few months ago - and I've just now added Movie and Websites pages there as well
